about Alexander the Great and Coins Minted in His Name
The Macedonian empire was founded by Alexander I but carried forward by others including Philip II (Father of Alexander the Great) and Alexander the Great. Philip II developed the army and tactics that enabled Alexander to accomplish his victories. Alexander the Great is considered the greatest military general ever. The conquests of Alexander the Great changed the world for ever. Following Alexander's death in 323 BC his generals divided his vast empire between themselves and began to squabble over his legacy. In the period of turmoil that followed, the image of the deified Alexander played an important part, as his successors tried to cast themselves as his heir. Various monarchs continued the production of coins in the name of Alexander in this context. When Alexander conquered territories, he looted the conquered kingdom's precious metals, gold and silver (i.e., plunder). He, and his successors, minted coins in his name with that plunder. These coins are the plunder taken by Alexander the Great.

Tetradrachm Coins of Alexander by General Lysimachus Like the Herakles-type tetradrachms described above, these are large silver coins. Most weight about 17 grams and measure about 28 to 32 mm diameter (about the diameter of a US $.50 but twice as thick). These tetradrachms were minted by Lysimachus, one of Alexander's successor Generals, and feature Alexander's portrait wearing the horn of Ammon. These portraits are generally considered the most accurate representation of Alexander. The reverse scene is Athena seated, holding Nike (representing Victory). When Alexander conquered territories, he looted the conquered kingdoms precious metals, gold and silver (i.e., plunder). He, and his successors, minted coins in his name with that plunder. These coins are the plunder of Alexander the Great.

#4693: CELTIC Tetradrachm 350 BC, Commemorates an OLYMPIC GAMES
VICTORY !! Historical Context: This coin was minted by the CELTICS around the reign of Philip II of the MACEDONIAN EMPIRE (494 - 168 BC). Philip II was the father of ALEXANDER THE GREAT. The CELTS originated in northern Europe (Germany and France) and dispersed over all of northern Europe. They were formable warriors who served as mercenaries. In the 2nd Century BC, they controlled all of northern Europe (Ireland to Spain). Their coinage often copies that of their Greek neighbors probably because they did not use coins internally, but used them primarily for trade. Original Celtic art is very abstract. Their coins follow that abstract concept. The Celts were ultimately overcome by the Romans in the first century AD. Obv: Zeus, Celtic Stylized SOLD $329 plus shipping
