about The Roman Republic These coins were minted by the ROMAN REPUBLIC (before the EMPIRE) during the 2nd-1st Century BC. This period is as active as the "Imperial Period" with regards to Rome's growth in size, power, and prestige. During the late period of the Roman Republic the issuance of coinage was administered by annually elected magistrates (Moneyers). The moneyers were swept up into the revolutionary tide created by the warlords as the Republic grew in strength. The moneyers were powerful in that coinage was a communications medium. Internal conflicts raged between Roman generals and they used moneyers to help promote their causes, their family names, their great victories. This is the era of Julius Caesar, Marc Antony, Brutus, and Pompey to Great. Following an intense civil war, Julius Caesar prevailed over the forces of Pompey and became dictator. Of course Brutus later murdered Caesar and began a war with Marc Anthony, Pompey, and Octavian. Octavian prevailed and the Roman Empire was founded.

#11870: SILVER Denarius - 25 to 5 BC, by Cleopatra Selene, Daughter, and only suviving heir of Cleopatra and Marc Antony RARE with Juba II Historical Context: Cleopatra Selene II (also known as Cleopatra VIII of Egypt or Cleopatra VIII was a Ptolemaic Princess and was the only daughter to Ptolemaic queen Cleopatra VII of Egypt and Roman triumvir Mark Antony. She was the fraternal twin of Ptolemaic prince Alexander Helios. Her second name in ancient Greek means "moon", being the counterpart of her twin brother‘s second name Helios, meaning "sun". She was of Greek and Roman heritage. Cleopatra was born, raised and educated in Alexandria, Egypt. In late 34 BC, during the Donations of Alexandria, she was made ruler of Cyrenaica and Libya. Her parents, Mark Antony and Cleopatra VII, were defeated by Octavian (future Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus), during a naval battle at Actium in 31 BC. In 30 BC, her parents committed suicide as Octavian and his army invaded Egypt. Octavian took Cleopatra and her brothers from Egypt to Italy. Octavian celebrated his military triumph in Rome by parading the three orphans in heavy golden chains in the streets. The chains were so heavy that they could not walk. Octavian gave the siblings to Octavia Minor to be raised in her household in Rome. Octavia Minor, who became their guardian, was Octavian's second eldest sister and was their father's former wife. Between 26 BC-20 BC, Augustus arranged for Cleopatra to marry African King Juba II of Numidia in Rome. The Emperor Augustus gave to Cleopatra as a wedding present a huge dowry and she became an ally to Rome. By then her brothers, Alexander Helios and Ptolemy Philadelphus had died, probably from illness. When Cleopatra married Juba, she was the only surviving member of the Ptolemaic dynasty. ROMAN REPUBLIC Denarius - 106 BC, Jupiter !! Attribution: L. C. Scipio Asiagenius (AKA Scipio Asiaticus) Historical note: Scipio the Elder (Scipio Africanus) wasknown as a Graecophile lifestyle, and his unconventional way of wearing the Roman toga, raised much opposition among the conservatives of Rome, led by Cato the Elder who felt that Greek influence was destroying old Roman culture and making the Roman men effeminate. Cato, as a loyalist of Fabius Maximus, had been sent out as quaestor to Scipio in Sicily circa 204 BC to investigate charges of military indiscipline, corruption, and other offense against Scipio; none of those charges were found true by the tribunes of the plebs accompanying Cato. (It may or may not be significant that years later, as censor, Cato degraded Scipio's brother Scipio Asiaticus (Asiagenius) from the Senate. It is certainly true that some Romans of the day viewed Cato as a representative of the old Romans, and Scipio and his like as Graecophiles. Obv: Saturn BUY NOW $99.95 plus shipping
