These are some of the most interesting and collectable artifacts from Medieval EUROPE. These crosses were fabricated between 700 and 900 AD primarily for Clergy and Monks, although commoners may have also wore these. When they were made, people believe these protected them from negative Magic Spells and disease. Reliquary-types were made of two halves, front and back. They are hinged together. Period Oil Lamp - 6th to 8th Century AD, Christian Cross !! Historical Context: This OIL LAMP was fabricated by the ROMAION (Byzantine) EMPIRE (Remnants of the ROMAN EMPIRE) around the 6th century AD. The Romaion Empire rose from the remnants of the ROMAN EMPIRE. This empire based on its founding on EARLY CHRISTIANITY in CONSTANOPLE by the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great (around 320 AD). The OIL LAMP offered is used by a Romaion Family for evening light during early Medieval Times. The lamp was filled with olive oil and light at the smaller hole on the end of the lamp. The top of this lamp is nicely decorated with varied patterns. Please see the picture. Attribution: BYZANTINE OIL LAMP, 6th to 8th Century AD: This lamp is teracotta ceramic and measures about 115mm (4 1/2) inches end-to-end. This lamp is in excellent condition and is "INTACT."
