The name comes from Koine Greek "Θυάτειρα" (Thuateira). It lies in the far west of Turkey, south of Istanbul and almost due east of Athens. It is about 50 miles (80 km) from the Mediterranean. Roman Judaea Capta-Type Coins
These coins were minted starting in 70 AD to commemorate the Roman conquest of Judea. On the one side of the coin there appears "Judaea" or :Judaea capta" ("Judea conquered"). Judea is typically depicted as a mourning woman sitting under a military trophy or palm tree. The head of the Emperor appears on obverse side of the coin. "Thy men shall fall by the
sword, And thy mighty in the war. And her gates shall lament and mourn;
And utterly bereft she shall sit upon the ground. (Isaiah 3:25, 26) So
fell Jerusalem in the second year of Vespasian’s reign, on the 8th of
September, captured five times before and now for the second time laid
utterly waste...There was no one left for the soldiers to kill or
plunder." (Josephus, The Jewish War, 21, 22)

Jewish Coins of the Bar Kochba
Revolt
These coins were minted by the Jews during the Bar Kochba Revolt (132 to 135 AD), also known as The Second Jewish Revolt against Rome. Roman Emperor Hadrian attempted to assuage the anger and humiliation of the Jews after the Second Temple was destroyed. Due either to Hadrian's good intentions that he ultimately could not deliver on, or perhaps due to his false intentions, either way the Jews came to believe that, under his rule, they would regain control of their homeland and the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. However, Hadrian went back on his word and made numerous demands upon the Jews, including moving the Holy Temple and later, as an ultimate sacrilege, the building of a temple to Jupiter in Jerusalem. Under the strong leadership of Shimon Bar-Kokhba, the Jews rebelled against the Romans a second time, and captured approximately 50 strongholds and 985 undefended towns and villages in Israel and Judea, including Jerusalem. Despite incredible odds, the Jews held out for three years, but ultimately fell to the Romans with the final battle at Herod's old fortress at Beitar. During the Second Jewish Revolt, Rome lost so many of its best troops that upon the final victory several variants of commemorative coins were issued. In their variations, these coins are known as "Judea Capta" coins, because they either explicitly say or imply that Judea has been captured, and are replete with a face of the Roman dictator, and the weeping figure of a Jewish woman, representing Judea, on the obverse.

Widow's Mites of Bible Story Fame
These coins were minted in ANCIENT JUDEA between 103-76 BC. Although these coins were struck before the time of Jesus, they were the most widely circulating coins in Judea during his lifetime. The Bible story of the Widow who gave all that she had (two mites) is one of the most popular Biblical stories. In ancient Judea, a destitute woman, who was widowed, contributed most of what money she probably had to the temple as an offering. Jesus observed her generosity and told his disciples "I say unto you that this poor widow hath cast more in than all they (the rich men) have cast into the treasury. For all they did cast in of their abundance but she of her want did cast in all that she had." (Mark 12:41-44) Jewish Prutah, like the coin offered, were the most common small denomination bronze coin in Ancient Judea and is believed that these are the most likely coins that the "Poor Widow" actually had in her hand.

- 10 BC, HEROD the GREAT !! Historical Context: This coin was minted in ANCIENT JUDEA between 37 to 4 BC under the Governorship of HEROD the GREAT. Herod was named governor of Judaea by the Roman Senate in 37 BC. One of his first official acts was to order the deaths of 45 members of the Sanhedrin, a prior governing body. About 28 BC, he had a number of his family members murdered, including his wife, and not long after he ordered two of his sons to death. Upon hearing of this, Augustus (current Roman Emperor) said, "It is better to be Herod's pig than his son," a well known and famous quote. At the end of his life, he led the effort to assassinate the Christ Child by ordering the slaughter of all male Jew babies in 6 or 5 BC. Jesus was born about 6 or 5 BC, not 1 BC. Of course, he failed. Attribution: Judea, 10 BC, Herod the Great: The obverse (front) of this coin is an ANCHOR and legend. The reverse scene is a DOUBLE CORNUCOPIA and CADUCEUS.
