Historical Context:  These coins were minted in Europe during the reign of NAPOLEON BONAPARTE (1799-1814 AD). Napoleon I (1769-1821 AD), emperor of the French, consolidated and institutionalized many reforms of the French revolution. One of the greatest military commanders of all time, he conquered the greater part of Europe and did much to modernized the Nations he conquered. Born in Corsica, he was the second of eight children. He joined the revolution in 1791. He engineered a masterful defeat of the British at Toulon and was promoted to Brigadier General . He married Josephine in 1796. He led a coup in 1799 and became emperor. His downfall came when his alliance with Alexander I fell apart. He invaded Russia and was defeated. He abdicated in 1814 and was exiled to the Mediterranean island of Elba.
