Historical Context: These coins were minted by the ROMAN EMPIRE during the reign of HADRIAN A.D. 117 - 138. P. Aelius Hadrianus, having lost his father he was placed under the care of a guardian, Trajan, a future emperor of Rome. In 100 he married Trajan's grand-niece, Sabina, and he was adopted by Trajan.  Upon Trajan's passing, Hadrian assumed the throne.  He is best known as the builder of the great wall across England from the Tyne to the Solway. His rule was firm and humane.  He was also a patron of the arts and his palace is one of the most well regarded amongst Roman Emperors. He later adopted Antoninus Pius as his heir, whom succeeded him. They are known as the adoptive emperors. This was the Golden Era of Rome.

Historical Context: These coins were minted by the ROMAN EMPIRE during the reign of HADRIAN A.D. 117 - 138. Sabina was the wife Hadrian, 120 to 136:  Sabina was the great-niece of Trajan.  She married Hadrian about 100 AD.  Hadrian, having lost his father he was placed under the care of a guardian, Trajan, a future emperor.  He is best known as the builder of the great wall from the Tyne to the Solway.   His rule was firm and humane and he was also a patron of the arts. It is widely beleaved that her and Hadrian did not have a happy marriage.  Hadrian was well known for having a “gay” lover.

Historical Context:  These coins were minted by the ROMAN EMPIRE during the reign of AELIUS (136 - 138 AD).  Aelius was the descendent of an ancient and distinguished Etruscan family and was named Consul for the Year 136 AD. The same year he was adopted by Hadrian as his heir and designated successor.  After his term as Consul, Aelius was given the governship of Pannonia, where he served for less than one year before returning to Rome.  He died unexpectedly January 1^st 138 AD.

Antoninius Pius was a senator.  He was adopted by Hadrian as his heir in 138 and his succession was smooth.  The history of his reign is minimal owing to the tranquility and prosperity which Roman world enjoyed under the patient, judicious and impartial rule.  It is said that he instructed his artists to show him with a "thoughtful" portrait so the people of Rome would feel comfortable with him. Based on the portraits on his coins, they hit their mark.  He also adopted Marcus Aurelius as his successor. They are known as the adoptive emperors. This was the Golden Era of Rome.

Historical Context:  These coins were minted by the ROMAN EMPIRE during the reign of MARCUS AURELIUS A.D. 161 - 180:  He was later adopted by Antoninus Pius and took the name of M. Aelius Aurelius Verus.  In 139 he was Caesar and in 145 he married Faustina Jr, the daughter of Antoninus Pius.  He became Augustus in 161. At the death of Commodus, he expressed his allegiance to Pertinax, but after his murder and the shameful elevation of Didius Julianus, Severus was saluted as emperor by the troops.  He led his troops to victory and became Emperor.  He founded a dynasty in Rome that lasted a number of generations. Some of the oddest people ever to rule Rome were part of this dynasty. This emperor brought onto the empire one of its most turbulent periods.  It is said that he instructed his artists to show him with lengthy beard even thought he had a short cropped beard. Historical Context: These coins were minted by the ROMAN EMPIRE during the reign of CARACALLA (198-217 AD). M. Aurelius, originally named Bassianus, the elder son of Severus. In 198 was created Augustus, although only ten years of age. On the death of Severus, Caracalla reigned jointly with his brother Geta. However, he had Geta assassinated, reportedly while in the arms of his mother. His reign was marked by extravagance and cruelty. He achieved more by treachery than by force of arms. He had his portrait (as an adult) potrayed with a skowl so that the Roman people would fear him.  The one notable action attributed to him, was giving to all free inhabitants of the Empire the privileges of Roman citizens. He was part of the SEVERAN DYNASTY, which lasted a number of generations and included some of the oddest people ever to rule Rome.

He was known to "cross-dress" and at one point had asked the Senate to declare him high priestess of Rome. He also married a Vestal virgin.  He claimed that he and the virgin would have devine children. As part of his sun worshiping garb, he wore a horn. Historical Context:  SEVERUS ALEXANDER (222 – 235 AD) -  He was the son of Julia Mamaea and Gessius Marcianus. Through the machinations of his mother and his grandmother, Julia Maesa, Alexander became emperor. They arranged for his adoption by Elagabalus, his cousin, and given the title Caesar. After the murder of Elagabalus, he was acknowledged as Emperor. In 235, enroute to Germany to quell an uprising, Alexander and Julia Mamaea (his mother) were murdered at the camp near Mainz.  This eneded the Severan Dynasty, which was one of the strangest of dynasties to preside over Rome.
